April 21st sounds like the perfect day to grab a date and head to the Philharmonic Abilene Encore! We are so excited to showcase the amazing talent that comes from the Big Country. The Abilene music family will be together, and we would love for you to join us. We are honored to have Steinway Artist pianist Mark Puckett, globe-trotting vocalists Lynnette Chambers and Samuel Cook, and Philharmonic principal hornist Jeff Powers and principal trombonist Brent Phillips all with us for one outstanding performance.
The show will be composed of classical pieces that showcase each of these performers perfectly. You won’t want to miss this line up with this group of performers!

Dr. Mark Puckett, professor of piano, artist-in-residence, and Steinway Artist, has performed as soloist and chamber musician in the United States, Canada, Europe, Central America, and Asia. In addition to performing, Puckett is in demand as a master class clinician, lecturer, and adjudicator. Dr. Puckett is a professor of piano at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. We are thrilled to host the talented Dr. Puckett in our Abilene Encore show.
Lynnette Chambers will join us with her jaw-dropping vocal talents. Also a professor at Hardin-Simmons University, Lynnette has been at Hardin Simmons for 20 years as a professor of voice. She has performed throughout the United States and Italy, and made her professional stage debut in 1995 as Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus with Southern Ohio Light Opera. She has been a soloist all over the world, and featured in countless concerts.
Speaking of vocalists, we will have the award-winning Samuel Cook with us as well. He is a Metropolitan Opera National winner and the First Prize winner of the prestigious Francisco Vinas International Voice competition in Barcelona, Spain. In 1999, after residing in Austria and Germany where he was engaged as soloist and enjoyed success in many leading operatic roles, Mr. Cook and his family moved to Abilene. He, along with his wife, travel each summer on mission trips to South America or Africa, where he shares the Gospel in song. Presently, he is an Artist in Residence and Associate Professor of Voice and Opera Director at Abilene Christian University.
Jeffrey Powers, Principal Horn of the Abilene Philharmonic and Professor of Horn at Baylor University School of Music, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with “Honors in Music” from Austin College in Sherman, Texas and a Master of Music in Horn from The Cleveland Institute of Music. Mr. Powers is known for his clinics and masterclasses. He has five solo CD’s released to date. “Let All That Hath Breath Praise the Lord – Music of Praise for Horn”, “Into the 21st Century – Music for horn and piano by Baldwin, Bentzon, Pilss and Vignery”, “In a Lyrical way – Music for Horn and Piano by Flemish Masters” and “Steppingstones for Horn, Volume I and Volume II. We are honored to have Jeff Powers as our Principal Horn at the Abilene Philharmonic.
Our other Abilene Philharmonic native is Brent Phillips, our principal trombone. He is currently the Associate Professor of Trombone at Baylor University. Prior to this position, he was assistant principal trombone of “The President’s Own” US Marine Band in Washington DC. He has given recitals in Ostend Belgium, Santa Fe Argentina, Fasano Italy, Panama City Panama and throughout the US in many of our nations prestigious universities and conservatories. We are honored to have him with us for this special event!
